IRCPL Undergraduate Summer Fellowships supports summer research or internship opportunities for Columbia University undergraduate students with a strong interest in the study of religion and/or secularism. Applicants are encouraged to reach out to faculty members regarding research assistant opportunities.
Successful candidates will receive a maximum of $1,500 and are expected to participate in the intellectual life of the Institute by attending public programs during the academic year. Fellows are also expected to submit a brief report of their experience upon completion of their summer research.
Eligibility
Undergraduate Summer Fellowships are open to undergraduate students at Columbia University, Union Theological Seminary, Jewish Theological Seminary, and Barnard College. Please note that graduating seniors are not eligible for this fellowship.
Application Requirements
All proposals must be submitted in English. Emphasis should be placed on completeness of the application and clarity of content. Proposals must be submitted through the online application form.
Please submit your documents as a single PDF file and clearly label it with your first and last name.
Curriculum vitae (maximum two pages): Please include your major and up-to-date contact information.
Proposal (three pages maximum, double-spaced): The proposal should include a description of the research project/internship. Students conducting research should specify the name of a faculty member acting as advisor during the project; students accepted for an internship must provide documentation.
Personal statement (500 words maximum): Please tell us about yourself.
Budget: Please include an itemized budget listing expected expense amount and type of expense (e.g., lodging, travel, access to archives, etc.).
Transcript: Unofficial transcripts are acceptable.
One letter of reference from a faculty member. This should be sent to ircpl@columbia.edu. It is the applicant’s responsibility to ensure that the faculty member sends a letter of reference. Late letters will not be accepted.
Conditions of the award
IRCPL will host a research fellow roundtable discussion prior to the dispersing of research funds. All award recipients are required to attend the roundtable to discuss their work and future research plans. IRCPL Research Fellows are then expected to present and participate in a research fellows colloquium the following academic year. This colloquium will provide fellows with opportunities to present their work and participate in other activities, including those related to professional development.
