Feminisms in Southeast Asia

November 20, 2014 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm

Feminisms in Southeast Asia
with: Kristy Kelly, Saskia Schaefer, and Doris Gatmaitan Ramirez

This panel discussion aims to explore the various feminisms of Southeast Asia that are often misrepresented and convoluted by Western media and the dominant liberal discourse.  We will be focusing our attention on Islamic feminisms in the region, as well as feminist resistances in the context of developmental agendas.

The discussion will feature Kristy Kelly (WEAI & SIPA), Saskia Schaefer (IRCPL & WEAI), and Doris Gatmaitan Ramirez (Director of Human Rights and Peace Desk, Lawyer’s League for Liberty) in an insightful dialogue to unravel the ways in which these feminisms work in tandem with, and yet distinguish themselves from, liberal democratic feminism.
